Eiffel - Day 3 - Langscheid - Schmidtheim
This is the route we rode today:
We had a good breakfast (strawberries, yum!) and we started cycling at 08:20. It was raining in the morning but when we started it was nice and dry.
Spirits are high
We had to stop a couple of times today because my brother had some issues with losing baggage today 😂
Pit stop to fix baggage
Cycled 6.7km, climbed 138m, currently at 453m high.
The day started pretty good and we had some nice roads to ride on.
Road
Cycled 10.1km, climbed 304m, currently at 621m high.
But then it started raining and we started descending down into the woods. At a certain point we noticed that the road was blocked a bit further back (but we came off a side road) but we just continued on. What we realized afterwards was that this means that trees had been cut down recently, so the road just stopped.
Thou shalt not pass!
Cycled 16.5km, climbed 360m, currently at 496m high.
We looked at our options and we took a side road which had some trees laying over the road.
Trees over the road
Cycled 16.6km, climbed 361m, currently at 508m high.
It was pouring rain and the road started to deteriorate more and more due to the heavy machines which had been recently there. I was starting to doubt if this was the right decision.
Bad bad road
Cycled 12.8km, climbed 330m, currently at 460m high.
In the end we managed to get down to a better road. At a certain point I was fearing that we had to backtrack but all went ok. It stopped raining and we had some coffee at a gas station.
We started ascending again and crossed a village where we saw flower ornaments. People passing by told us it’s a holiday today: Corpus Christi. Which means even less open cafes and restaurants 😇

Cycled 27.7km, climbed 636m, currently at 524m high.
Our climbing continued and it was now around lunchtime. We passed a couple of benches but they weren’t ideal. In the end we had a standing buffet 😂

Cycled 35.4km, climbed 700m, currently at 320m high.
The climb to the plateau was gradual but it took us around 20 kilometres. It wasn’t too difficult but we had some rainy bits in between which made choosing between a raincoat or not kinda annoying. We stopped at a point where people doing a pelgrims walk to Compostella also passed by.
Compostella
Cycled 51.9km, climbed 1095m, currently at 547m high.
We arrived at our destination around 15:40 which was pretty early considering the route we had to tackle. Luckily the sun was shining so we took the time to clean our luggage (always tricky to enter the hotel with luggage dripping with mud). My bike is still pretty dirty though 😇

Cycled 62.6km, climbed 1166m, currently at 536m high.
Luckily we also had time to enjoy the sunshine as the hotel only opened at 17:00.
Enjoying the sunshine
The hotel is really nice and we had a really good dinner. Tomorrow we’ll be finishing our trip and we’ll be driving back home.
See you tomorrow!
