USA - Day 29 - Sweetwater campground - San Diego
This is the route we cycled on our last day
While researching yarn shops to buy a gift for Carolien I noticed we would pass a shop that lay almost on our route. So that was our first stop in the morning. The shop was pretty American looking, not very cozy but I found something cool and nice 👌

We continued our route through an industrial part of San Diego and then we entered down town. The end was in sight.

Our second stop was a bike shop where Bart had ordered some spare parts and tires. We put everything away and put one tire each on the back of our bikes.
Tires!
Cycled 28.9km, climbed 103m, currently at 25m high.
And then we cycled to our Airbnb where we would stay the next couple of days. It was really nice and they were very welcoming. We had access to the whole house (living room, kitchen, balcony) so we prepared spaghetti for ourselves (home made food, mmmMMMmmm!). They even invited us to the weekly dinner where we got to meet our hosts, the owner and other guests that were staying. It was fun :-)

We discovered a nice and cheap Mexican bakery nearby. You take a plate and take the items you want to purchase and go to the register. They put everything in bags and you pay. Our breakfast and lunch for the next days was settled 😊

The first day I walked half an hour to a bikeshop to get a cardboard box for my bike (they charge 20 dollars for a box they throw away, insane!) and walked back uphill with the thing. Not easy but I got it done. The next day we went to the home depot to get a smaller box for my other baggage, tape, wrap and bubble wrap.

Cycled 18.7km, climbed 55m, currently at 25m high.
When we got back I stripped my bike and wrapped and protected it as good as I could. Bart in the meanwhile did maintenance on his bike as he will be continuing on to Baja Mexico.
Bike wrapped
Cycled 36.2km, climbed 195m, currently at 65m high.
Of course we also took the time to celebrate the end of our trip. We found some good Belgian beer so we felt right at home.

We had one day extra that we used to go and visit the USS Midway. It’s a decommissioned aircraft carrier that was in operation from 1945 till 1992. If you ever visit San Diego this is a must see. It’s amazing to see the scale of this thing and as it was still running before everything was digital you see some really cool old school engineering.

Cycled 24.6km, climbed 67m, currently at 5m high.
And then the last day arrived. We wrapped my boxes in plastic, got a rental car and all the boxes fitted neatly (not much room to spare, pfew!).
Everything in the car
Cycled 36.2km, climbed 195m, currently at 69m high.
Bart drove me back to LA (hopefully traffic was ok in the other direction!) and on the way I got to see Mount Baldy ( which we crossed ) one more time (at least I think so 😅)

And now I’m waiting to board my plane and to go back home to Carolien and see my family again. Really looking forward to that!

This was a dream trip and I’m really happy that we didn’t have any major setbacks and everything went so smoothly. Thanks for the idea and company Bart and be safe out there man!
See you next time on my next trip!
