USA - Day 26 - Anza-Borrego Desert State Park - Borrego Palm Canyon campground
This is the route we cycled today
I slept very well tonight, it was super quiet and almost no wind. It was a campspot to remember.
Our campspot previous night
We cycled a short bit and then walked to the windcaves. They look pretty cool and the view from high up is also amazing.
Windcaves
Cycled 2.0km, climbed 77m, currently at 215m high.
After this we continued on Fish Creek Wash to exit the park. The wash was still bad so we were glad to hit tarmac.
Cool part of the wash
Cycled 3.1km, climbed 90m, currently at 124m high.
The road now was long and straight with quite some wind. We also noticed signs such as ‘Ocotillo Wells - offroad capital of the world’. There were also a lot of dirt bikes and buggies zipping around. And RVs everywhere. It was a special place. We stopped at Iron Door bar to get some cold drinks and then continued on.
Iron Door bar
Cycled 21.5km, climbed 121m, currently at 52m high.
After this we hit the highway which was a lot less pleasant. Lots of big RVs passing by. But we got through it. We talked with 2 road cyclists when we got off the highway and then made our way to Borrego Springs. There we saw some sculptures, cool but not super special.
Elephant statue
Cycled 44.7km, climbed 338m, currently at 183m high.
We arrived at Borrego Springs at 12:30 and went to got some lunch. Afterwards we went shopping for some supplies and then cycled to the campground. The staff at the campground was really nice and even drove with us to our hike & bike campsite.
Our camping spot for the night
Cycled 57.8km, climbed 461m, currently at 242m high.
We were near a group camp site and while we were setting up they started eating. I heard things like ‘this is amazing’ and ‘sooo delicious’. And we were going to eat noodles 😒
But then they came over and invited us to join which was super nice! We had Thanksgiving dinner with turkey and stuffing and pumpkin chocolate chip cookies and … . Made my day!
Tomorrow is probably going to be less fun as we’ll have to tackle 30km uphill on the highway. But it’s the only way out so we’ll get through it!
See you tomorrow!
