USA - Day 23 - Cedar Creek - Oakzanita campground
This is the route we cycled today
The night was pretty windy and I woke up lots of times but all in all it was pretty ok. This was one of the ‘wildest’ camping spots untill now for me.
Our camp spot this night
Today we had a pretty heavy day planned: 1 400m in elevation which meant almost a whole day of climbing. I wasn’t looking forward to it and I think Bart neither because he has caught a cold (probably from the previous cold days).
We got on our bikes at 07:45 (we’re getting a bit faster in the morning) and started climbing up. The first section was pretty steep but after that the grade lessened and the road widened.
Our road up
Cycled 10.2km, climbed 599m, currently at 969m high.
We were making steady progress and it was good that the road became more and more rideable.
Going up
Cycled 12.3km, climbed 732m, currently at 1089m high.
When we were past the highest point we had our famous tortilla lunch and then continued on towards Victoria’s kitchen. We knew we would be able to eat something there. We arrived around 12:00 which was ahead of our plan so we had plenty of time to rest.
Our rest stop
Cycled 28.4km, climbed 1112m, currently at 1037m high.
We got something to drink and while sitting on the bench outside the store the owner came out and hung up the flag. This presented a beautiful American picture:
America!
Cycled 28.4km, climbed 1112m, currently at 1039m high.
We continued on in the direction of our campground with a short trail that wasn’t always easy (or maybe it was just the end of the day?). When we arrived we told the lady at the entrance that we were a day late for our reservation. She gladly changed the reservation so we didn’t need to pay again which was awesome!
Our campspot tonight
Cycled 36.4km, climbed 1365m, currently at 1186m high.
The camping is pretty cool, we have electricity, running water and the restrooms and showers are nearby. The shower is one of the best I have ever seen in a camping! There is even a hottub and swimming pool.
Tomorrow we’re heading to another primitive campground without water and the day after that we’ll be in Borrego Springs.
See you tomorrow!
