We got up at 06:30, went shopping for some breakfast and got started at 08:45. The first kilometers were all normal roads and a bit downhill so we made good progress.

Cruising in LA

Cycled 5.2km, climbed 4m, currently at 172m high.

After all the roads we entered Griffith park were we saw our first rattlesnake sign of the trip.

Cycled 12.1km, climbed 88m, currently at 233m high.

We continued climbing and at the top we saw the one and only Hollywood sign.

Cycled 18.2km, climbed 286m, currently at 359m high.

This was very close to the Griffith observatory where we stopped to enjoy the view over downtown LA. It’s insane how big this city is…

Cycled 19.7km, climbed 320m, currently at 353m high.

From here on we had a descent and we had to ride some roads again. We crossed the freeway on a very typical bridge so we had to take some pictures.

A typical bridge in America according to me :-)

Cycled 24.9km, climbed 322m, currently at 127m high.

After a while the route took us to Los Angeles river. On this part it’s a weird combination where the river bedding is completely made out of concrete but there are still trees growing in the middle.

We got lunch around 12:00 and we had already cycled 40 of the 54.4 km so we decided to go a bit slower. We went to the supermarket as we needed to get food supplies for the next 3 to 4 days.

The supermarket trip took 2 hours in total as Bart went first and then me (we never leave the bikes alone) and it was our first time to buy that much food. It’s not easy!

After this we stopped for a coffee and started the climb up to the campground. And wow, I have to tell you: carrying more than 5 liters of water and food for 3 days while climbing up at max 15% in 30 degrees full sun is not easy at all!

But we got to the campground around 16:45 and there were still spots free so that was perfect. It’s near a small river (yeah water to wash yourself!) and has bear lockers.

Out dinner tonight: noodles

Tomorrow we start our real offroad adventure with a big climb, looking forward!

See you tomorrow.
