Sauerland - Day 4 - Waldhotel Einstein - Meinerzhagen
This is the route we biked today
Breakfast was served at 08:00 and afterwards we descended towards a small little shop to get our supplies for the day.
Ready for our last day
After a descent you have to ascent of course and we did this using a road that started in the little town. Of course the road started out normal, then became really steep, forcing my dad to push his bike for the last part.
Steep stuff, no other choice than to push
Cycled 3.0km, climbed 87m, currently at 436m high.
And this was only the beginning, after this we had to ride on something that used to be a road but was now overgrown with grass and bushes. The cherry on top where the trees that were blocking the road.
Trees blocking the road.
Cycled 3.2km, climbed 91m, currently at 427m high.
We managed to push our bikes around the trees and after that we only had rocky climbing in front of us. The whole morning was filled with these kind of things, impossible steep climbs on very bad roads, trees blocking our path, roads disappearing into the woods, … . The fact that we planned this day to be the longest route with the highest elevation started to look like not the best plan.
A tree blocking the road? That's just breakfast!
Cycled 4.5km, climbed 180m, currently at 522m high.
As we continued our day we had descents on roads filled with stones, sliding down a walking trail, … but we managed to get to a couple of lakes around 13:00. We hoped we could find a nice place to drink a coffee or something but the lakes were pretty deserted. We had to cycle along a busy route for a while and had to reroute and did manage to drink an (overpriced) cola at a certain point.
The lake
Cycled 30.9km, climbed 878m, currently at 317m high.
After the busy roads I was happy we were climbing away from the lake and we took the time to have some lunch while overlooking the second lake. We split up our remaining water and continued.
A view on the lake with a huge camping behind it
Cycled 39.3km, climbed 1047m, currently at 365m high.
After this we still had quite some elevation left but luckily it was all relatively easy (compared to the rest of the day). We made pretty good progress and arrived at the car around 15:45.
This was another epic trip with my dad and I’m over the moon that I can share this experience with him. Can’t wait for the next adventure!
See you next time, probably somewhere in Los Angeles in November!
