We started with a climb to the castle of Vianden which got us warmed up as we immediately took of our jackets when we were at the Castle. After some continued pedalling we got to enjoy an awesome view.

Cycled 2.4km, climbed 118m, currently at 333m high.

To get down again we had to do some tricky descents with narrow bends, steep single path trails and stairs to finish.

Cycled 3.1km, climbed 134m, currently at 253m high.

We continued along the river with an easy and wide gravel path. The highlight of this part was the cool bridge attached to the rocks and a water power plant.

Cycled 10.2km, climbed 178m, currently at 263m high.

After some further pedalling where we crossed the border with Germany (on the other side of the river ) for a couple of kilometres we took a road up to an old copper mine (active untill 1943). Untill 1929 they used a wooden sled and horses to drag material up and down through the river as there was no road.

Cycled 12.0km, climbed 228m, currently at 281m high.

After this we had to tackle 15km on the plateau and the elevation indicated we would gradually go down but the many small hills and wind made it a lot more exhausting than i hoped.

Cycled 20.1km, climbed 545m, currently at 541m high.

After the plateau we had around 12km with a couple of hills and those turned out to be the hardest part of the day. The climbing was not only heavy (at 700m ascent and we had to do a total ascent of 1000m) but we also had quite some other obstacles as well.

And here the road ends

And here the road ends
Cycled 40.6km, climbed 938m, currently at 384m high.

One of those obstacles was a deadend and we had to turn back and go around. When we were at the other side of the railroad we discovered the next part was a really narrow and steep trail. We started pushing our bikes and we rode them whenever we could. The recipe we followed? Go up a small part, catch your breath and repeat.

Tackling tricky trails

Cycled 44.1km, climbed 1087m, currently at 438m high.

During the last kilometers we repeatedly said: “only 1/2/3/… kilometres left” to only discover another steep section or obstacle after the bend. At 1 kilometre from the car we were sure it would go smooth from there on. And then we discovered this.

Who left these trees here???

Cycled 44.1km, climbed 1087m, currently at 451m high.

At this point we were riding this trail for so long that it would have taken us too much time to go back. So we had only one option: climb under and over these trees while carrying our bikes.

After this only a couple of small climbs remained and then we arrived! Happy and safe 🙂

Happy to be at the car

I feel privileged to have been able to share this adventure with my dad. We had amazing weather during our trip and it could have easily been rainy days as well. Our hotels were nice and we arrived in one piece!

Thanks for an awesome time Dad!

And now it’s time to take a rest 😅
